Yes there are Rummanys in the US that moved from Ireland and England and even Turey awhile ago. But we usually have big Sweet 16s and not weddings.
For those asking about why they don’t have weddings like this in the US, it’s because these weddings are (more likely than not) Irish Traveller weddings, and you find the largest concentration of them in the UK and surrounding areas.
As for me, I’ve wondered how those poor brides even maneuver in what has to be about 50 lbs. of tulle. Even simple things like sitting, walking, and going through doorways has to be a nightmare. I know I took those into consideration when I ~made~ my wedding gown.

I cannot stand traveller weddings. Am I the only sane person here?!!! Yes. We all have that chance and that oppurtunity to be happy. But, come on now. These pictures are hideous. The girl in the blue dress, in the last picture, looks like she’s constipated, or she wants to rrun away. In all retrospect, I don’t blame her. Sure. I’m a very open-minded person. But, as an open-minded person, I also have s shear sense of honesty, and truth. Think about. I’m not talking about the ways, or the initial culture of the travellers. But the style I can safely say is atrocious. You have girls that look like they are fifteen, sixteen, seventeen, and even eighteen years old, wearing layers of makeup like a thrity yea old. Even alot of thrirty year olds, dont’ wear that much make up. Also, the bride’s dresses are gregarious, and have to be uncomfortable. You have ten or twelve pounds of lace, or silk, or organza, as a dress, then you have another twenty pounds, added on with the overlapping ridiculous train. Most of all, when it comes to the bridesmaids, they all look like prostitutes or drag queens in training. Now really, depending on the weather (even still) let’s say if it really sweltering outside, or extremely cold. Let’s say for the girls in pictures 9,10,and 11, wear those dresses in 85, or god-forbid 90 degree heat. they would lose a good ten pounds from sweating, and most likely suffer a heat stroke. All in all, it is pretty tragic. But, the people involved in these types of weddings, that I believe truly suffer, are the children. They have to wear scantily clad, skimpy, and tawdry outfits throught the whole thing. they are fed so much negativity, anf obscure information about their bodies, that they carry that with them thorughout their childhood, adolescence and finally adulthood. Sure, fashions, and trends cahnge all the time. But pyschological scars can reamin forever. That’s my take on all of it.

I grew up down the road from a large traveller site and have never had a problem with them, infact whenever I have come across them young, old, male or female they have shown me nothing but respect they always smile at you if you pass them in the street and will always say thank you if you hold a door open for them which is more than I can say for a lot of us “country” lot!

Parents in the US would go to JAIL if they took the kids out of school permanantly in elementary/middle school age! There are MANDATORY ATTENDANCE LAWS! Teens are allowed to drop out and get their GED after 9th grade, but requires parental consent, This is a shame that these girls are almost illiterate, but they sure can scrub a trailer and curse up a storm on a blog!.

From a cultural standpoint, I think it is a very interesting tradition. It would make a wonderful sociological study for a Grad student.
I think many girls dream of being a princess for a day! People love to dress up too, thus the array of dresses on the guests. Everyone seems to be okay with how they look and they appear to be having a great time. I say GO FOR IT!
My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding just started airing on TLC over here in Canada. I have to admit, I first came across this site and thought “Oh my god, what is wrong with these girls.. they look like sk*anks!”.
BUT thanks to that show, I am shown a completely different side of their lives. They may look like prostitots in their dresses but their morals and ethics are so high it makes most North American girls seem like common whores. I know that I would not be able to live a life of a gypsy girl. Obviously it is completely normal for them to live their lives the way that they do but it is still a hard life! (from an outsiders perspective).
I am 22 and am getting married over here in Canada. It’s sort of young to get married at only 22 here but after watching that show I feel like an old bag now! Haha.
I just watched my big fat Gypsy wedding this evening and all I kept thinking about was how many poor old people were fleeced in the making of that program to pay for that garish tripe. I just started watching “My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding.” I’m 65yrs old and have 2 daughters. I only wish my girls were raised as strictly as these girls are raised. There is good and bad in every culture…I think the dresses are beautiful (a little over the top because they cannot walk down the aisle)…I saw one venue at an animal rescue center that if I was a Traveler Bride…I would go nuts over it…it was beautiful…
I think the elder Travelers could invest in a place for wedding venues….that way they wouldn’t be having their venue cancelled which is awful…The dressmaker does a beautiful job and the cakes are fantastic…
I hope, though, that the girls get more education…not to get away from the culture, but to learn about the world. I am married to the same man for 45 yr…I like learning about the world…and it has taught me many things …such as about the Travelers and Gypsies…they would learn about other cultures and that’s a good thing…Good Wishes to all Travelers and the brides to come…

If you girls love this style and that’s what you want, fine. Just realize not everyone is going to like it, whether they are a traveller or not. Honestly, i think the wedding party outfits look like drag queens on crack! It appears you spend a great deal of money on the dresses, but the reception is a little low-rent, then you go live in a trailer to be a housewife right? That is the impression we are getting from the TV SHOW. Why do you quit school so early? Don’t you think it would be a good thing to know how to read above a 4th grade level. Maybe improve your reputations by getting an education, Quitting school in 5th grade would not be allowed over here.

1- i AM getting married at seventeen, because ive been with my fionce since i was ten, i love him and he will be a great provider for me and my children,plus my mammy and daddy like him.
2- i WILL have a big dress, carriage and fairytale cake, its my only day, its the day i become a woman and leave my daddy for my husband, we only do this once unlike many settled girls so we make a big show of being a princess for a day.
3-my daddy WILL pay for the wedding, why shouldnt he? hes worked for me and me sisters all his life and this is like a final present before our husband becomes responsable for us, im his eldest daughter and his little princess so why shouldnt i have my dream day?
4-i WONT get a job after marriage, why should i? ill clean the trailer, care for my husband and eventually our children, thats what i want to do, thats what ive been brought up to do. if i wanted i could go to collage or get a job but if we can live on my husbands wage alone then i dont need to, most of you gorgas wouldnt work unless you had to, you’d rater spend time with your children and husbands right? well we can afford to do that, stop being jelous.

The reason why I don’t think it’s wise to quit school so early is because you become totally dependent on others for income and support. What happens if your husband ends up being a drunk? What is he beats you? What if he cheats on you? Or you going to stay with him because you have no other options in life? Or hope your parents will take you back? If you quit school without knowing ENGLISH or MATH, do you really think you can get a job other than flipping burgers if your husband leaves you for another woman? Trust me, some of the redneck culture here does the same thing (quitting school in 9th grade to get married to some dude and live in a trailer) and I’m not impressed by them either. Your reasoning on not going to college or having a career is flawed if your life doesn’t end up as you want it to. It’s always good to have a back-up plan. What if your husband dies in a car wreck unexpectedly? Or gets some horrible disease and dies very young? What are you going to do then? How would you support your family then?
I waited to get married at 23. I graduated college, and after I had my son, I went on to get a Master’s degree. I have a successful career as an investment analyst. Just proving a point that you can have a family and a career and education. I find it unfortunate that many of the girls in the gypsy life have to quit school to raise their siblings because their parents don’t seem to know when to quit having kids. If they can’t take care of the kids by themselves, then they need to go against the Church and use birth control. I chose to go to college and graduate school and have a career because I never want to be dependent on a man. Plus I enjoy having my own money, where no one can say shit if I want to buy a pair of Louboutins. BTW, I never got a C in any course, please tell me yours wasn’t in ENGLISH!
My main point was that if they don’t want to endure any criticism, DO NOT GO ON A TV SHOW! Do not go on a blog bragging about how great the traveller and gypsy life is, and expect those of us who aren’t part of it not to be fans. I’m not jealous of these weddings at all. Honestly, I’m old enough to be your mother. So please heed my advice and think about taking at least some technical courses, have a plan in case things don’t turn out like you hope they do. I will let you know my mother did pass away very young from a horrible terminal illness, so shit like that does happen.
PS, if you really want the wedding everyone will be jealous of in the traveller and gypsy community, don’t follow their trends or just try to keep up with what your friends are doing,stir it up by starting your own trend and having your following a few simple tips.
1. Don’t wear the hoop skirt. Those went out in the 80’s. You don’t need to look like you are going to a hoe down. Trust me, I was raised a good Southern girl, and hoop skirts are horrible. You can’t walk, sit, pee, ect. Just not necessary to have a nice dress.
2. Balloons are tacky at receptions. Anything you could make out of balloons can be made out of flowers instead.
3. Stay away from hot pink, lime green or any other neon colors.
4. Hire a professional wedding planner.
5. Hire a professional makeup artist and hair stylist, but make sure the person knows not to do you up in drag makeup and hair.
6. Don’t model your wedding on Katie Price to Peter whatshisname? . How long did that last? Maybe use Kate Middleton as inspiration for your dress instead.
7. If you want your reception to have a bit of class, do not have a buffet. Have menus. Go in to the place who is catering the event to create your menu. Let people ORDER. Have white glove service. Have plates cleared and brought to the table in sync.The only acceptable thing to have not served by wait staff would be dessert and wedding cake.
8. Provide a nice party favor for the guest such as Godiva chocolate or something similar.
9. Provide a cocktail service prior to guests entering the reception area with appetizers such as tapas and a raw bar. Go to a mixologist (master bartender) to help develop some signature cocktails for the event. One to represent bride,another to represent the groom, and a third one to represent the couple. Also, have a great non-alcoholic option for the kids (such as a virgin version of one of the bride and groom’s cocktails)
10. Do NOT and I repeat..DO NOT wear a sheer bodice/corset like the girl is wearing in photos #5 & 6. Also, do not force your bridesmaids to wear dresses that a drag queen wouldn’t even wear. Sometimes less is more.

I started watching my “Big Fat Gypsy Wedding” and was fascintated by the history, culture and way of life. I am 52. I married the 1st man I slept with, not in the right order but close(!) and was raised a Catholic girl of Irish decesent, but very American. My Dad just sent me a picture of my 1st Communion and I LOOKED like a little bride. The veil, which I didn’t remember was quite eaborate. I understand that this is THE day of your lives and am only sorry that I feel you don’t have much more to look forward to after your Wedding Day. But it is easy to see that most are happy and this is your way of life and the only way of life you know. I admire your convictions and family values….Here is to YOU!
